Today, at 4:42 a.m. (local time), Sumatran rhinoceros Ratu delivered her second calf fathered by Andalas, who lived at the L.A. Zoo from 2003 through 2007. The Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary in Way Kambas National Park, Indonesia—where Andalas, Ratu, and Harapan (Andalas’s younger brother) now live—is one of the beneficiaries of Bowling For Rhinos (BFR) funding.
BFR-supported programs in Asia and Africa have demonstrated significantly lower poaching losses of critically endangered Sumatran rhinos, thanks to conservation efforts that mobilize local communities to become part of the solution—so Ratu, Andalas, Harapan, Andatu, this little calf, and all the other endangered wildlife in these areas have the best chance to survive.
(P.S. It’s not too late to contribute to Bowling for Rhinos this year! To do so, please visit AAZK-Los Angeles.)
